You don’t want to start setting up another rule book, like: “This is how you’re a feminist. And this is the way you dress. And this is the way you act. And this is the way you protest.” It’s like, some people protest carrying signs. Some people protest by making activist radical music. Sometimes people try to just make it through a day and not kill themselves, and that’s their activism for right then, because that’s all they have.

Unsung Hero: James Reese Europe

Europe, who held two assignments, bandmaster of the regiment’s outstanding brass band and commander of a machine gun company, served at the front for four months and was the first black American officer to lead troops in combat in the Great War. The entire Fifteenth Regiment, which was given the nickname “Hellfighters,” emerged after the Allied victory in November of 1918 as one of the most highly decorated American units of the war.

Learn more about James Reese Europe on the Oxford African American Studies Center. We’ll be bringing you biographies of forgotten heroes from the First World War along with other information during the centenary year.
